Round Robin tests for Marinet

The third round of comparison between several experimental facilities organised within the European framework MARINET took place at the INSEAN labs (Rome, Italy). The previous ones were carried out at the Kelvin Hydrodynamic labs at Université de Strathclyde (Glasgow, UK) and at the IFREMER's Hydrodynamic and MetOcean lab (Boulogne/mer, France) at the end of 2013 (see news on 30 December 2013 and 8 July 2013).

The model used for these tests was a three-bladed horizontal axis marine turbine developed by IFREMER. Comparisons were based on the performance measurements of the device (torque and thrust) in a flow velocity range from 0.6 to 1.2 m/s. The same testing protocol was reproduced in each facility. The use of the same acquisition hardware, software and the presence of the IFREMER staff during these tests ensured for the testing protocol was kept constant.

Obtained results from these four different facilities (two circulating tanks: IFREMER and INSEAN, and two towing tanks: 76m long at Glasgow and 220m long at Rome) will be compared. Turbulence and blockage ratio effects will also be analysed.
